Victims of Sexual Violence: Statistics

 

Millions in the U.S. are impacted by sexual violence.

“A person is sexually assaulted every 73 seconds in the U.S.” Each year, around 463,634 individuals aged 12 or older are victims of rape and sexual assault.

Most sexual assault victims are under 30, and this demographic is further broken down into age groups: 12-17 year-olds (15%), 18-34 year-olds (54%), 35-64 year-olds (28%), and those 65 and older (3%). The highest risk of rape and sexual assault is among those aged 12-34. Individuals 65 and older are significantly less likely to experience rape or sexual assault compared to younger age groups.

There are alarming rates of sexual violence against women and girls. A study reveals that 1 in 6 American women has faced attempted or completed rape in her lifetime, with 14.8% being completed rapes and 2.8% attempted. By 1998, an estimated 17.7 million American women had endured attempted or completed rape. Young women face particularly high risks: 82% of juvenile victims are female, and 90% of adult rape victims are female. Females aged 16-19 are four times more likely than the general population to be subjected to rape, attempted rape, or sexual assault. College women aged 18-24 are three times more likely to experience sexual violence, while non-students of the same age are four times more likely.

Men and boys are also victims of sexual violence. Studies show that male college students aged 18-24 are five times more likely than non-students of the same age to experience sexual violence. Millions of American men have been rape victims. By 1998, about 2.78 million men in the U.S. had experienced attempted or completed rape. Approximately 3% of American men, or 1 in 33, have been subjected to attempted or completed rape in their lifetime, and 1 in every 10 rape victims is male.
